Taking a look at the highs and lows for Orange County’s teams and players in Week 6 of the football season.
THE HIGHS
Colton Chase, San Juan Hills: The senior receiver caught the game-winning touchdown with less than a second remaining in San Juan Hills’ 27-24 over Tesoro.
Brodie Hitchens, El Modena: Hitchens ran for 114 yards on 9 carries, including a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage. The senior also had an interception in El Modena’s 44-7 win over Brea Olinda.
Aidan Houston, Cypress: Houston ran for a 69-yard touchdown on his first play back from injury for Cypress in a 52-7 win over Pacifica. The senior completed 10 of 11 passes for 163 yards.
Danyel Khan, Sage Hill: Khan scored five touchdowns (three receiving, one kick return and one interception return) in Sage Hill’s 57-13 win over Foothills Christian. Defensively, he had two interceptions with a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Aaron Mitchell, Foothill: Mitchell ran for 220 yards on 23 carries with four touchdowns for Foothill in its high-scoring 62-36 win against Esperanza.
Cash O’Byrne, Tesoro: The junior quarterback threw for a career-high 378 yards with a touchdown in a close loss to San Juan Hills.
Jaden O’Neal, Newport Harbor: O’Neal completed 22 of 30 passes for 202 yards with five touchdowns in Newport Harbor’s 59-21 win over Fountain Valley.

THE LOWS
Unbalanced leagues: Two leagues showed this week that there is a large gap between the top and bottom halves of the league. Cypress, Tustin and Crean Lutheran dominated their Empire League opponents by an average of 40 points. St. Margaret’s and Santa Ana beat their Orange Coast League opponents by an average of 48 points.
HUNTLEY’S FINAL WORD ON WEEK 6
We learned a few things about the Orange County football scene in Week 6. Two of the three Freeway League games were one-score games and one of which was decided on a blocked extra point. The Freeway League might provide us with the most competitive games this season.
Mater Dei and St. John Bosco dominated very good Servite and Santa Margarita teams in their Trinity League openers. While the depth of the league is better than it has been in the past few years, the two teams at the top are still miles ahead of the rest.
Some very good teams have must-win games coming up if they wish to break the .500 threshold and qualify for a potential at-large playoff spot. Tesoro is an excellent 3-3 team that has had two losses decided in the final minute. The Titans need to beat Trabuco Hills this week in case they don’t finish in the top two of a loaded South Coast League and earn an automatic playoff spot.
Brea Olinda is 4-2 but will play in the very competitive Crestview League this season with Villa Park, Yorba Linda and Foothill; all teams ranked in the Register’s Top 25. The Wildcats will have to beat Canyon this week in order to guarantee at least a .500 record and earn a potential at-large playoff berth.
