Orange Vista football team uses fast start to beat Western, advance to Division 5 title game – Press Enterprise
PERRIS — Orange Vista football coach Greg Zomalt is not afraid to fan the flames when necessary.
Friday night, Orange Vista’s defense forced a turnover on downs when Western failed on fourth-and-6 from its 39 on the opening possession of the game.
Zomalt used the moment to fire up his team, telling them the decision by Western was disrespectful. And the players responded the way Zomalt hoped.
Orange Vista scored touchdowns on its first two plays from scrimmage to grab a quick double-digit lead. And the offense continued to put up big numbers throughout the evening, as the Coyotes walked away with a 63-46 victory in a CIF Southern Section Division 5 semifinal game.
Sire Gaines led the way on offense, rushing for 222 yards and five touchdowns on 17 carries and catching two balls for another 51 yards. The No. 2-seeded Coyotes (10-3) will make the trip to top-seeded Newbury Park (10-3) for the Division 5 championship, which will be played Nov. 24 or Nov. 25.
While the game will be most remembered for the offensive fireworks provided by Gaines and company, the first statement was made by the defense.
“We’re an aggressive team to start with. So when somebody give us a reason to take that to another level, we’re going to embrace it and use it to our advantage,” Zomalt said about his words following that fourth-down stop. “I like to keep that aggression and get those emotions up at a high level.”
Orange Vista quickly capitalized, as Khalil Abdul-Aziz threaded a pass to Sandy Smith for a 39-yard touchdown to put the Coyotes on top 63 seconds in.
Western (11-2) faced fourth-and-9 at midfield on its next possession, and the offense initially stayed on the field. But after a timeout, the Pioneers lined up to punt and pinned Orange Vista on the 19. Gaines took a handoff on the next play and raced away for an 81-yard touchdown that doubled the Coyotes’ lead. Western stopped the bleeding when Anthony Luna threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Desmin Joshway-Fairley on the next play from scrimmage.
But Western’s defense had few answers for Gaines, who is committed to Arizona State as a linebacker. Gaines plowed through defenders on his way to a 42-yard touchdown run midway through the first period to give the Coyotes a 21-7 lead. The two teams continued to trade scores into the second quarter.
Western appeared to gain some momentum late in the first half, when Malachi Alatorre and Luna scored on runs of 2 and 15 yards, respectively, to cut the deficit to 35-26. But Orange Vista needed only 40 seconds to add another touchdown before halftime. Abdul-Aziz connected with Gaines for a 35-yard completion with 6 seconds remaining on the clock, and Gaines then powered into the end zone from 3 yards out for his fourth touchdown of the half.
Gaines added a 7-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He has rushed for 576 yards and eight touchdowns in Orange Vista’s three playoff games.
Orange Vista will be making its second appearance in the section finals. The Coyotes were the Division 13 runner-up to Adelanto in 2018.
“I have prayed to God, days and nights, for this opportunity,” Gaines said. “My goal has always been to help lead this team to a title.”
Abdul-Aziz completed 17 of 21 passes for 266 yard and two touchdowns. Orange Vista finished the night with 580 total yards of offense.
Luna completed 25 of 54 passes for 371 yards and three touchdowns and added 39 yards and two scores on the ground to lead Western.
