OCVarsity’s Football Student Section champion and Top 20 rankings for 2023 – Orange County Register
Every high school football season gives teams and players a chance to compete on Friday nights (and sometimes on Thursday nights), and to show who is best at what they do.
Football teams battle on the field to win championships and to be ranked No. 1.
And here in Orange County, the football student sections battle for those same things, too, in their own way.
The student sections show support, creativity, camaraderie, humor and lots of other positive traits while coming together to cheer for their teams throughout the season.
Now that we’re days away from the CIF-SS championship games, it’s time for the student section expert, Manny Alvarez of The Student Section Report, to help OCVarsity select the Orange County Student Section Champion for 2023 and to rank the county’s Top 20 sections.
Here is what Manny had to say about this season:
“Normally we have a Student Section that stood well above everyone else, but 2023 was the season where it seemed every Student Section was on the same page when it came to rowdiness and being in the game.
“Some of these Student Sections had amazing leaders that had to step up to get the “I’m too cool to cheer” kids. Those kids are best off sitting at the other side of the stands, but the leaders handled business and made sure students stepped up, especially when their team needed the 12th man in the stands.
“The winner of the 2023 OCVarsity Student Section title will receive a championship banner from yours truly at halftime of the 2024 O.C. All-Star Football game on February 3 at Newport Harbor High School. We gave this banner last year to the El Modena Rowdy Rooters and to the Los Alamitos Locos in 2021.”

Before we go to the rankings, let’s hear from some of OCVarsity’s reporters about what they thought of the student sections in Orange County this fall:
From Steve Fryer: “The Servite Asylum continues its wild and hilarious creativity. I keep waiting for the guys to run out of ideas but they never do. … I get to games very early, and when I arrived 90 minutes before kickoff for a San Clemente home there already were more than a hundred San Clemente students in the stands!!”
From Michael Huntley: “The student sections that stood out the most to me this season were the San Clemente Loud Croud and the El Modena Rowdy Rooters. These two stood out to me because they were consistently loud throughout the game and most importantly, they reacted during the appropriate moments of the game. Any section can party in the stands, but the best ones pay attention to the game and give the team a lift at the right moments.”
From David Delgado: “The Segerstrom Jungle has always been a source of lively energy. They show up early and stay engaged even before the opening kickoff. Maybe one reason for the energy is the music selection, with artists like Nas, Mobb Deep and Pharaohe Monch blaring through the speakers during pregame warm-ups. Kudos to the Jungle for recognizing great hip-hop music. And during the game, usually after a big play, the “Jaguar roar” keeps the Jungle loud. I always enjoy my visits to Segerstrom and the Jungle is a big reason why.”
Here are the rankings for the 2023 season:
OCVarsity Football Student Section Top 20
1. Servite Asylum
(2022 Rank: 16)
This season was quite an improvement over last year for the Friars, both on the field and in the stands. This Student Section took a fall in the rankings in 2022, but came back big in 2023, living up to that rich Asylum tradition. The crazy themes and the crazy kids in the stands were a great combination. There were mosh pits galore and lots of of soaked shirts due to all of the water they threw around.
This is one of the few Student Sections that is focused on the game from start to finish and loves to rattle opposing players and teams.
The Servite Asylum is back on top as the 2023 Student Section Champions and will be adding a championship banner to its collection.
“We are incredibly grateful for this recognition from OC Varsity,” The Asylum said in a statement. “Our student leaders worked tirelessly, coordinating with fellow students, teachers, and coaches to prepare for the season. The entire Asylum always shows up dressed in costumes, having skits readied to entertain the crowd, and, of course, ready to cheer for their brothers on the field. The Asylum shows the best of our brotherhood, and we are honored to be named OC Varsity’s Student Section of the Year.”
2. San Clemente Loud Crowd
(2022 Rank: 9)
It is tough to have a small town vibe in Orange County, but San Clemente pulls it off. There is a small town feel, and this town loves the Loud Crowd. The Loud Crowd can pack the house and will pack it an hour before kickoff. Their fog machines work nonstop, and so does this Student Section. The Loud Crowd shows a lot of love for its team and its town.
3. San Juan Hills Stampede
(2022 Rank: 23)
The Stampede is building a reputation as one of the best home student sections. It is a special kind of atmosphere when you arrive at the Badlands. The Stampede enjoyed a huge season, which included a 27-24 victory over Tesoro to win the Bell. The Stampede rushed the field to celebrate with the players after that win. It’s a moment the Stampede will remember forever.
4. JSerra Lion Nation
(2022 Rank: 4)
Lion Nation is a problem for opposing teams, especially when teams are trying to score and the student section is so close to the action in the end zone. The section knows when and how to rattle an opponent. No need for funny images on the scoreboard; Lion Nation knows what to do. We didn’t hear much from Lion Nation this year, but when we did, it was pure gold.
5. Capistrano Valley Cage
(2022 Rank: 5)
I didn’t get a chance to see the Cage in person this year, but I hope they perfected the robot T-shirt machine. That looks really cool. The powder is something a lot of schools do, but the Cage does it better than anyone else in the county.
6. Los Alamitos Locos
(2022 Rank: 6)
The Locos stayed the course and kept the amazing tradition they have had in the stands for years. Despite losing their Locos leader, nothing changed as Los Al remained crazy. One of the best roller coasters you’ll see in the county comes from the Locos.
7. Villa Park Black Pack
(2022 Rank: 2)
It is tough to maintain a student section at the highest level year after year, but the Black Pack kept their student section at the top. The Black Pack always finds a way to replace the best leaders with even better leaders.
8. Mission Viejo Diablo Inferno
(2022 Rank: 7)
Diablo Inferno goes all out for their football team. This student section is ride-or-die for their team and they were rewarded with a great season. They have one more big home game, against Servite and The Asylum in the CIF-SS Division 2 championship game on Saturday night.
9. El Dorado Hawks Nest
(2022 Rank: 8)
The Hawks Nest definitely comes through in the clutch. I saw them wake up last week when the Golden Hawks came back from 13 points down to win in double overtime, 30-29, to advance to the CIF-SS finals. The Hawks Nest went nuts and is one of those student sections that is totally focused on the game.
10. El Modena Rowdy Rooters
(2022 Rank:1)
It is tough to match what the Rowdy Rooters did last season, but the Rowdy Rooters maintained a winning tradition in the stands. Always had amazing chants that go along with a wild and wacky group of kids.
11. Newport Harbor Tarpit
(2022 Rank: 15)
12. Irvine Frontier
(2022 Rank: 11)
13. Santa Margarita Eagles Nest
(2022 Rank: 18)
14. Tesoro Titan Army
(2022 Rank: 25)
15. Foothill Dungeon
(2022 Rank: 21)
16. Canyon Tribe
(2022 Rank: 12)
17. Troy War Zone
(2022 Rank: 34)
18. Trabuco Hills Stampede
(2022 Rank: 32)
19. Segerstrom Jungle
(2022 Rank: Not ranked)
20. El Toro Bullring
(2022 Rank: 20)
