Newport Harbor girls soccer earns tie in tough battle with Los Alamitos – Orange County Register
LOS ALAMITOS — After 40 minutes of play in regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods, the Surf League girls soccer game between Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos on Thursday at Los Alamitos High School ended in a 1-1 tie.
Considering that the Griffins are ranked No. 6 in Division 1 of the CIF Southern Section and on the Open Division watch list for the playoffs, coming away with a tie at Los Alamitos can be considered a plus, Newport Harbor coach Justin Schroeder said.
“They are a very talented team at almost every position on the field,” Schroeder said of the Griffins. “But we matched that talent with just hard work and dedication and just some really hard play.”
The Griffins (9-4-5, 1-0-1) are also defending CIF-SS Division 1 finalists and Southern California Regional finalists.
“I feel like today we had more chances and we did more to try to win the game,” Griffins coach Pat Rossi said. “Creating chances won’t guarantee goals. So, it hurts a little more because of the chances we had.”
Newport Harbor (11-4-3, 1-0-1) took a 1-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half when Sadie Hoch took a cross pass from Kate Kubiak and headed the ball over the goalkeeper’s head and into the goal.
The Griffins’ Sofia Bugarin took a cross pass and kicked the ball into the net to tie the score 24 minutes into the second half.
With four minutes remaining in regulation, Bugarin came close to winning the game for the Griffins when she took a hard kick from 20 yards out, but Newport Harbor keeper Cooper Dick dove to her left to make the save.
Los Alamitos did an excellent job controlling the ball in the second and in overtime, making sharp passes to work the ball down the field.
Numerous times, the Griffins used their wingers to quickly move the ball along the right and left sidelines and then attempt to send cross passes to forwards running toward the goal.
The Griffins came close several times but they couldn’t quite get the ball to a player who was in a position to score.
Other times, Sailors defenders were able to create enough disruption to cause an errant pass or prevent the pass from reaching the intended target.
The Griffins and Sailors both won their respective league openers.
Teams get three points for a victory and one point for a tie and since the Griffins and Sailors both won their respective league openers, both finish the week with four points.
“Our goal this week was to come away with a minimum four points and we did,” Schroeder said. “It would have been great to have six but now in the second half of the league, we get them at home. So, we really accomplished what we set out to do this week. It’s a good feeling when you can walk away off Los Alamitos and it wasn’t a loss.”
